The brief
Design a five-bedroom family house in a style sympathetic to the other houses on the street, with natural light maximised and a home office included. The location offers great privacy among similar properties with large mature gardens, close to Ascot racecourse and station, first-class schools and a choice of top golf courses.
The design
The front of the house is fairly traditional, fitting in with its neighbours. The garden side has more the look of a French orangerie — curved, double-height doors and windows that flood the living areas with light and make the most of the south-west orientation. We wanted it open and airy in line with today's lifestyle, but unlike most new-builds in the area: original and full of character, with wide open areas as well as cosier rooms to retreat into.
On entering, the eye flies through the living room to the garden. The living / dining room is overlooked by a gallery and crowned by a two-storey, white-painted beamed cathedral ceiling; kitchen, dining and lounge sit in one open room, with a cosy library sharing an open fire with the lounge. Five large en-suite bedrooms open from the gallery, the master and second bedrooms lit by the tops of the double-height windows.
Status
As designed, the project was approved by the authorities and given the green light to build. The house is currently under construction; photographs of the finished house will be published here when available.
