The brief
The clients loved the location in Barnes, the home's good bones, its architectural features and the long 85-foot garden. The scope was ambitious: a rear kitchen / breakfast / family-room extension with deck access; a complete kitchen overhaul around a large island; converting the old "nanny's room" into a study with reconfigured bathrooms; a new side service entrance; opening up the front lounge and dining room; an en-suite to a guest bedroom; and a full attic conversion into a master suite.
Changing the layout
The extension created a roomy and light family room with three oversized French doors opening onto a wooden deck. The new kitchen features an L-shaped, two-level island combining counter and table heights. Velux windows and reclaimed pine flooring were chosen to match the existing materials so the new work feels original to the house.
On the ground floor we introduced a bay window between the reception and dining rooms, and turned the old bathroom into a cloakroom and pantry with access to the new service entrance.
The new top floor
The attic conversion is defined by a full-length, full-height dormer — creating a second floor with a master bedroom, en-suite, dressing room, study and laundry. The finished home reaches 3,000 sq ft with five to six double bedrooms, and increased the property's value by two and a half times on resale.
